Castelli Unlimited: Omnes Viae

By Stan Portus – 17 February 2020

The Castelli Unlimited collection has been designed to carry you over any surface and any terrain, uniting Castelli’s fast road performance with backroad capability.

Cycling has always been about a spirit of adventure. It’s about finding new roads and trails, discovering new places, and never taking the easy route. Regardless of discipline or what riding people are talking about, anyone who has spent parts of their life of two wheels knows one thing: how good it is to explore.

Castelli’s new Unlimited collection is all about this. Designed to carry riders over any surface it’s about not limiting yourself, and not making any compromises. If you want to go there, go. When the tarmac runs out, keep on riding.

Made with durability and performance in mind, Unlimited unites Castelli’s famous road performance with backroad capability, making it the ideal choice for touring and everyday riding on uneven pavé, gravel, trails, and bridleways. Or in fact, any surface you can think of.

Fuori Jersey

The Fuori is a lightweight jersey made from Castelli’s ProSecco Unlimited fabric. The material is more durable than Castelli’s out-and-out race fabrics to face the demands presented by taking roads less travelled, but functions just as well in other areas.

The polyester knit offers excellent breathability and stretch, keeping you cool and comfortable day after day. Prosecco Unlimited fared best when Castelli tested fabrics for snag and Velcro resistance.

A highly resistant stretch material is used in the sleeves, shoulders and back panels. These are two areas that are particularly prone to catching on overhanging branches and other obstacles and take the brunt of bike carrying. The stretch improves freedom of movement and comfort for riding day after day.

The Unlimited W Jersey shares all the same features as the Fuori but is made in a women’s specific cut and a brighter design.

Unlimited Bibshorts

Castelli has always looked to its professional riders for kit inspiration and listened to their demands. As professional racing has ventured more and more onto dirt tracks and gravel paths the risk to riders has increased.

The Free Protect Bibshorts were Castelli’s answer to Chris Froome’s desire for a short that would provide greater protection on rough roads and volatile stages.

Castelli found inspiration from the track riders who used to wear two pairs of shorts, knowing that Lycra on Lycra is the best way to prevent road rash on the hip. With the Free Protect Bibshorts Castelli has added an extra panel of Vortex fabric on the thigh meaning that you get the same fabric-on-fabric shear force that you get from wearing two pairs of shorts.

They may have been made for the pros, but every cyclist knows the risk of coming off and the Free Protect Bibshorts provide the sort of safety that is never not appreciated.

Stuffed pockets can become empty pockets pretty quickly when venturing off smooth roads. The Unlimited Bibshorts take a very similar approach to the Free Protect Bibshorts with an extra layer of material on the thighs for protection, but with the Unlimited shorts Castelli has used this extra fabric to also create a pocket on the thigh.

Two more pockets are built into the bibshort’s upper to compress any supplies, a phone, or a Brevet card snugly against the body and out of harm’s way.

The Unlimited Bibshort is made from 200g/m2 fabric that is highly resistant to abrasion and tearing, while not compromising on stretch and moisture management.

Gloves for Comfort and Versatility

Omnes Viae is the Latin for ‘all roads’, and just like the rest of the Unlimited collection the Unlimited Long Finger Glove is just at home on tarmac as it is anywhere else.

The glove has been designed for when a little protection is needed on brisk early starts and to calm the chatter of gravel road. The thin back is stretchy creating a snug fit while packing down small to take up minimal room in a jersey pocket or frame bag. With a comfort range of 12˚ – 27˚C the gloves are usable in a wide variety of conditions.

Unlimited Socks

Just because you’re heading out on the back roads doesn’t mean you shouldn’t look good. The Castelli Unlimited socks pair up with the Fuori jersey, and the women’s specific version pair with the Unlimited W Jersey.

Made from Meryl Skinlife yarns the socks prevent bacteria build up, fight against odour and are moisture wicking meaning you’ll feel as fresh as you look. A pique knit compression cuff improves comfort and circulation.
