Refining its SES wheel lineup for 2022, ENVE has pushed the envelope for strength, weight, tubeless setup and aero excellence in the form of four new, versatile wheelsets.

The all-new wheel lineup follows ENVE’s commitment to its “Real World Fast” design philosophy of creating performance-orientated products that not only demonstrate exceptional aerodynamics in the wind tunnel, but at the speeds riders spend most of their time at on the open road. ENVE tests its wheels at both 32kph/20mph and 48kph/30mph, to find the sweet spot that will benefit professional and amateur athletes alike.

Launched in 2011, the Gen 1 SES wheelsets – commencing with the ENVE SES 6.7 – were launched with front and rear specific designs. These optimised the wheels for the different air flows that they would be subjected to, since the airflow at the front of the bike is different to the turbulent airflow that runs over a rear wheel. The same optimisation principles have been applied to the 2022 lineup. The front wheel uses a shallower and more rounded profile to maximise crosswind stability and handling, while the rear wheel uses a deeper, sharper and more streamlined profile to maximise power transmission and reduce drag.

A specialist in carbon design, ENVE has reduced the weight of its latest iterations of the SES line by using the latest construction techniques and laminate designs. The laminates are tapered and excess material is removed to promote weight saving in the right areas – but without a knock-on effect in terms of durability. By continuing to focus on the carbon itself, as well as the design process, ENVE builds exceptional strength into its wheels. The brand uses continuous fibres throughout the rim, layered in differing orientations, to enhance its resistance to impact, lateral strength and tyre retention capabilities.

Hookless rims depend upon precise bead seat diameters and optimised design, something ENVE has led the way in since the release of its Gen 2 M Series wheels in 2014. On launching the SES AR line in 2016, with the 4.5 AR wheelset, ENVE introduced this hookless technology to its road offering. The new SES lineup features ENVE’s latest, extensively tested Wide Hookless Bead design to help reduce the likelihood of pinch flats. You can therefore expect superior performance from these wheelsets, especially when coupled with ENVE’s own in-house developed tyres.

THE SES SERIES

Simplifying ENVE’s road range, the SES line includes just four wheelsets, the 2.3, 3.4, 4.5 and 6.7. Purpose built for how, where and what you choose to ride, each wheel has a distinct set of characteristics to suit your style, whether you favour lightweight climbing, full aero or all-round performance.

ENVE SES 2.3

Weighing less than 1,200g, the 2.3 is an uncompromised mountain production rim/wheelset, the lightest that ENVE has ever produced. The 28mm deep front wheel and 32mm rear wheel boast exceptional handling characteristics and a 21mm internal rim width, perfectly suited to a 27mm tyre. If lightweight is your thing, the 2.3 will be hard to beat.

ENVE SES 3.4

If you are looking for an all-rounder, go-everywhere wheel, then you cannot go wrong with the SES 3.4. Suited to everything from gravel excursions, to riding the mountains and fast flat stretches, the 3.4 is a high-performance mixed terrain wheelset that will win your affections with its versatility. Weighing in at 1,390g (including an ENVE hub/XDR Driver), the 3.4 is light on the scales and, with its 25mm internal rim profile and Wide Hookless Bead anti pinch-flat technology, will be the first choice wheelset of gravel and road riders alike.

ENVE SES 4.5

The SES 4.5 was the first wheelset in ENVE’s lineup to feature its tubeless technology. The 4.5 has been re-engineered to bring its weight down to a svelte 1,452g and is intended to be used with high volume road tyres for more speed, confidence and control, not to mention exceptional aerodynamics. A 49mm deep front rim is optimised for stability in cross winds, while the rear rim at 55mm will help you to slice through the wind.

ENVE SES 6.7

Designed to achieve the perfect blend of aerodynamics, weight and stability, the SES 6.7 is the fastest wheel in the SES range. The front rim is optimised with an external width of 30mm and a depth of 60mm, for front end stability, while the rear rim is 29mm wide and 67mm deep, for notable aerodynamics. With an internal rim width of 23mm that will couple perfectly with the ENVE SES 27 tyre, the 6.7 wheelset epitomises the “Real World Fast” philosophy. To round it off, ENVE has used its continuous fibre technology to keep the weight to just 1,497g, without compromising on strength.

The heart of the wheel

The SES range is available with ENVE’s road hub. Benefiting from PERFECT PRELOAD to eliminate the break-in period and a drive mechanism with a 40-tooth ratchet, it offers almost instant engagement. ENVE’s relationship with Chris King Precision Components continues to deliver not just exceptional performance and durability but the option to add a splash of colour to your wheelset.
