What to Wear Cycling Indoors

By Stan Portus –  30 March 2020

We are all facing challenges at the moment, and when it comes to cycling many of us are trading the open road for the turbo. We look at what kit will keep you comfortable while training at home and prepared for the road ahead.

For many of us, cycling is an incredibly important part of our lives. It helps us stay fit, in touch with our bodies, and provides a space to process what is happening around us. Despite the disruption that is happening at the moment, cycling remains an important way to touch base and maintain some normalcy. But the reality of the matter is that many of us are trading the open for the turbo.

Riding on a static bike presents some challenges when it comes to kit. There is no wind to cool you down, and the ambient temperature tends to be much warmer than outside. Castelli’s Insider kit is specifically designed for indoor training, and the Superleggera line is also ideal for riding on the home trainer as it is designed for the hottest conditions.

Insider Bibshorts

Using Castelli’s Pro Dry Soft fabric, the Insider Bibshorts offer superior breathability and moisture-wicking. This is the same fabric that Castelli used for its Inferno Bibshorts which were developed for pros racing in the hottest conditions, so it is tried and tested at the highest level.

The shorts use Castelli’s Kiss Air2 seat pad. With slightly lee padding than Castelli’s other pads, the Kiss Air2 is a favourite with the pros and offers just the right amount of padding for the home trainer. The chamois’ design also helps move moisture away from your body.

Insider Jersey

The Insider Jersey is made from a 3D Mesh fabric that is ultra-lightweight and offers maximal moisture wicking and quick dry properties. A short cut waist, low collar, and full-length zipper add to the overall ventilation of the jersey.

Wearing a jersey while plugging away on a turbo might seem unnecessary, but two rear provide storage for any essentials such as a headband, your phone if you are listening to music, or for any gels or snacks for when you’re doing a big session or race on Zwift.

When designing the Superleggera Bibshort Castelli set out to create a bibshort that securely hold sits pro-level Progetto X2seatpad in place but otherwise is as breathable as possible. The solution to this was to work with a world-leading mill to develop a fabric that is woven rather knit and utilises a gradient, meaning that the fabric gets lighter as it extends down the leg. Where a normal bib short fabric for weighs 220g/m2, at its lightest point this fabric weighs 90g/m2. Intended to be worn between 20 ̊ –40 ̊C the shorts are perfect for dealing with the ambient temperatures of indoors and the lack of any cooling wind.

The new Superleggera 2 Jersey combines Castelli’s fabric engineering and construction expertise to create a jersey that performs and looks good in equal measure.

The jersey is made from the new ‘Oltre’ fabric. ‘Oltre’ translates into English as ‘Beyond’ and the fabric really does go beyond what you would expect from a jersey material. The fabric is incredibly lightweight helping the jersey achieve its 102g weight. Horizontal striping in the material provides stretch and breathability for comfort.
