Troy Lee Designs Sprint and Sprint Ultra Gravity Kit

By Stan Portus –  7 April 2021

Calling all gravity riders. Troy Lee Designs Sprint and Sprint Ultra collections are for you. Tailored to meet the demands of downhill mountain biking and even suited to the chaos of the BMX track, the Sprint collections are ideal for shredders and rippers. Read our guide here.

Downhill, gravity, whatever you want to call it, jumping on two wheels and throwing yourself off something steep can be one of the most thrilling rides there is.

Here we’re looking at the best jerseys, shorts, and pants available for gravity riding, from the biggest name in mountain biking, Troy Lee Designs.

TLD divides its gravity kit into two categories, Sprint and Sprint Ultra. Both are tailored to meet the specific demands of downhill mountain biking and more specifically racing, providing plenty of stretch, room for pads, and reinforced fabrics for any tumbles.

Troy Lee Designs Sprint

Sprint is Troy Lee Designs longstanding downhill race kit, equally suited to Enduro and freeride. Released initially as a shorts and jersey combo the range has expanded to include a set of mountain bike pants.

Sprint Jersey

The Sprint Jersey has a long sleeve design that has room for elbow pads and any upper body armour, whilst being cut to TLD’s Race Fit to keep an athletic shape in the torso. Tapered sleeves provide enough room for pads whilst creating a cleaner overall cut.

Mesh arms, stretch side panels and a moisture wicking collar keep you cool, mobile, and comfortable on the slopes or the pump track. A drop rear tail provides extra coverage when you’re in the attack position.

Sprint Shorts

Ever since the Sprint collection was introduced it has undergone refinement, unlocking even more race winning potential. The Sprint Shorts are no exception. TLD has revised the articulation points across the shorts to improve the fit and the feel of the mtb shorts.

The fabrics used in the shorts are Bluesign® Certified, meaning they are good for the environment and for people, whilst being lighter and more durable than before. Mesh panelling aids breathability. Two pockets provide room for essentials like a card, phone and a lift pass.

Sprint Pants

The Sprint Pants share much in common with the Sprint Shorts, with a revised fit and the same use of updated, Bluesign® Certified lightweight and durable fabrics.

The pants, or mountain bike trousers, if you’re so inclined, are designed to accommodate knee pads such as the Raid D30s. The knee zone features a slimmer profile than previous models for improved articulation and pedal stroke. Stretch fabric on the outside of the leg aids movement and mesh panels on the calves also improve range of motion whilst offering some extra ventilation too.

At the bottom of the leg the tapered design keeps the pants away from the chain and seat stays and a thermo skin applied to the inside of the right ankle for resistance to any chain abrasion. Two zippered pockets provide room for essentials.

Troy Lee Designs Sprint Ultra

Sprint Ultra takes the Sprint collection but brings some premium touches tailoring it for rider’s seeking the maximum advantage come race day, or simply the very best.

Its origins extend back to a collaboration between Troy Lee Designs and Adidas, which was worn by riders such as Brendan Fairclough, Jack Moir and Mitch Ropelato. At the time, TLD called the collection “the most technologically advanced kit” in the sport and since then it has only undergone more refinement.

Sprint Ultra Jersey

The Sprint Ultra Jersey uses Troy Lee Designs Ultra Knit fabric. This quick dry and moisture wicking fabric has laser perforation for superb breathability. Mesh underarm vents help keep you cool in the most demanding situations. Like all the apparel in the Sprint Ultra family, the fabric in the jersey is Bluesign® approved.

Where the Sprint Jersey has a Race Fit, the Sprint Ultra is cut in TLD’s Precision Fit. This is a torso hugging cut that gives a streamlined fit and helps minimise any drag-inducing flapping in competition. Stretch gussets on the tapered sleeves is another nice touch that makes for easy on and off.

Sprint Ultra Shorts

Like the jersey, the Sprint Ultra Shorts also have a Precision Fit meaning the shorts have a slimmer cut and are articulated for an aggressive riding position.

Made from TLD’s Ultra Tech fabric, the shorts are ultra-lightweight and breathable. Perforation provides extra ventilation. A durable stretch fabric across the back of the shorts provides comfort whilst being resistant to any abrasion.

As these are a race orientated set of shorts, any embellishments are kept to a minimum. However, TLD has updated the design to include one zipper pocket for a phone, keys, or a lift pass.

Sprint Ultra Pants

The top half of the Sprint Ultra Pants share much in common with the shorts, with the same single pocket, low-rise waist for a race position, and rear stretch panel.

The bottom of the pants have rear mesh panels on the calves for increased ventilation and range of motion. Tapered lower legs keep the pants away from the chain and seat stays, whilst cowhide is used on the inside of the ankle to withstand any chain abrasion.
