Rising Team Ineos star, Egan Bernal, takes the biggest win of his career wearing Sidi Shot shoes in at the Tour de Suisse.
With team leader Geraint Thomas crashing out on Stage 4 of this year’s race, the hopes of overall victory for Team Ineos came to rest on the shoulders of 22-year-old Bernal. The Colombian has already been tipped as a future Tour de France winner and the youngster came to the Tour de Suisse having already secured the win at Paris-Nice in March.
With the first big general classification test coming on the mountainous terrain of Stage 6, Bernal put in a devastating attack on the final climb to Flumserberg. Putting his Sidi Shots to work, Bernal fractured the GC group in the closing kilometres to take second on the day and the overall lead by 12 seconds to swap his Castelli Team Ineos jersey for the Maillot Jaune.
Meanwhile, fellow Sidi athlete, Australia’s Rohan Dennis of Bahrain-Merida, moved up into second.
Stage 7 continued Bernal’s domination in the mountains, this time on the Passo San Gottardo. Team Ineos set a ferocious pace on the final climb, sucking up the breakaway by 5km to go.
With his teammates peeling off with 2.8km remaining and only one late attacker up the road, Bernal put in a full-gas effort to drop his competition as fellow Sidi athlete, Australia’s Rohan Dennis of Bahrain-Merida, rode hard to limit his losses and further cement his second place in the GC. Bernal took the Stage victory, crossing the line to add a 23-second buffer to his lead.
Ahead of the Stage 8 time trial, speculation was rife as to whether Bernal could hold of Dennis, the current World Champion against the clock. Bernal put in a strong ride to retain the yellow, conceding only 19 seconds to the Australian to finish with a leading margin of 22 seconds.
The final stage was another test of the climbers’ legs and while Britain’s Hugh Carthy’s gutsy long-range attack was rewarded with the stage victory, Bernal, bereft of team mates, stuck with the GC group as Bahrain-Merida’s Domenico Pozzovivo whittled down the peloton.
Dennis made a valiant attempt to get away, but there was no shaking Bernal. The pair distanced the other podium contenders to take second and third over the line, Bernal securing the overall race victory by 19 seconds.
While Thomas remains the Team Ineos leader going into the Le Tour, there’s no doubt that Bernal will also be a key name to watch on the roads of France this July.
